Kholodnyar Republic – a rebel state formation that existed in the territory of modern Ukraine from 1918 to 1922, formally part of the Ukrainian People’s Republic (УНР) but operating independently. During the Civil War, insurgent detachments numbering up to 30,000 operated here, in the Kholodny Yar area, fighting against Denikin’s troops and the Bolsheviks. The republic was led by famous atamans such as Vasyl Chuchupak, Andriy Hulyi-Hulenko, and Herasym Nesterenko-Orel. Despite an amnesty declared by the Bolsheviks, the insurgents continued resistance until 1925, providing aid to the starving and carrying out acts of sabotage, until they were suppressed during a special operation by the OGPU.
